I wanted to share 7 tips for better Travel Photography for all you fabulous travel bloggers out there. I love taking photographs when i’m travelling and enjoy nothing more than sharing the beauty of the places my adventures with The Fabulous Times have taken me. Here are 7 simple tips for better travel photography that I’ve adopted and use whenever I’m away discovering new places:
Capture colour: I love colour like a magpie loves bling, I’m instantly captivated by bright colours and get so excited to photograph them. When travelling, the colours of a place can often be what you remember the most, the luscious green, the bright blue skies, the stripey umbrella at the Monte Carlo Beach Resort or the faded beach houses on the Algarve. Photograph the colours that make up the scenery, you’ll find your travel snaps look instantly more fun!
Pick out details: If you’re blogging you’ll want to share with your readers the details of your adventures, it’s the small things right? The details make up a place and add that certain magic. Whether you’re on Hollywood Boulevard or on Brighton Beach, everywhere you look there are tiny gems making that one particular place special.
Utilize reflections: Taking photographs focusing on a reflective surface can be a great way to capture a landscape photo with a difference. This photo of the rippling water in the Lake District really captures the gentle, calm tranquility of a quiet misty morning boating on the Lakes.
Play around with black and white: I mostly use black and white when there’s an image with low levels of colour, for example like this stalk paddling in the gloomy looking swamp in Louisiana. Black and white also works well for more symmetrical, architectural subjects with strong lines, like this road bridge heading into New York City.
Be in the thick of it: Getting in amongst the crowds can be a little intimidating, but it’s so worth it to capture the lively attitude and vibrant happenings. Whether you’re at a parade in New Orleans, Glastonbury festival or Notting Hill carnival, fill the frame with the image and soak up the party atmosphere!
Capture the sunset: Cliché as it may be, sunsets make for a beautiful picture! Head out into the evening as the sun is setting, find a great vantage point and take a few snaps. Be sure not to spend the entire sunset behind the lens though or you might miss the romance… this picture was taken in Tofino, Canada, the most beautiful village ever!
Go out at night: Venture out into the dark to capture your travels at night, be careful of course! Cities look fabulous at night all lit up, like the harbor in Monaco. I usually place my camera on a wall or a flat surface to stop any hand wobbles and shoot without a flash. All photos were taken using my Canon D550 DSLR , taken without using a flash and just a standard lens. These simple tips have helped me capture some of the most fabulous destinations and hope they’ll be useful to you on your coming adventures…
Happy snapping! Christine
