If you’re not a big drinker and don’t fancy sipping cocktails all night, there are lots of cultural going-ons around the city to entertain you. Whether art or theatre is your bag, you really are spoilt for choice. I thought I’d share a few things to do in London at night to inspire your trip. Here are just seven ideas of things to do…
Late Night Gallery Opening
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly a lot of the London Art Galleries open late. You need to check the exact dates and times for each gallery, which you can do easily on the visit London website. The Royal Academy of Arts is open until 10pm every Friday with live music, lectures, talks and tours, plus late opening in the restaurant and bar.
Do some late night shopping
You can also go shopping in London after dark. Oxford Streets stores are open until 9pm every day – except Thursday when they’re open as late as 10pm! Whilst they can still get busy, shopping at this time can help you beat the midday crowds.
See a theatre show
A trip to a London theatre is a must whilst in the capital. You’ll find plenty of shows to choose from on the West End – many of which star world-famous actors. It’s worth booking tickets in advance in order to get the best seats and secure the best showing times. The Savoy Theatre is a beautiful place to go and see a show, the venue itself oozes character and old-fashioned glamour, the shows are good too!
Spend a night at the museum
Several of London’s museums are open at night once per month. For example, the Natural History Museum is open until 10pm every Friday on the last week of each month (with the exception of December). The Science Museum meanwhile opens its doors on the last Wednesday of each month (December excluded). Other museums may have exhibitions and special events on after dark that are worth looking out for.
Go on a ghost tour
There are plenty of tours that you can take around London. For those with a keen interest in all things spooky, going on one of London’s ghost tours could be a great way to explore the city. On top of checking out various spooky locations, these tours can provide a unique history of London. There are also Jack the Ripper themed tours that operate around London in which you can visit the locations of the infamous historic killer’s murders.
Take a boat trip along the Thames
For a more leisurely night tour of London, it could be worth booking a boat trip down the Thames. These trips can allow you to see and photograph all the famous landmarks. There are even boats that serve dinner as your go along, which could make for a great romantic date or a unique party location.
Head to the top of The Shard
The Shard is the tallest building in the UK and offers spectacular views of the city. It is open to the public on certain nights – there is a bar at the top where you can enjoy drinks whilst taking in the panoramas. On certain nights, the building even hosts silent discos.
