Fall in love with yourself. With Valentine’s Day stampeding towards us bearing as many red roses and heart shaped chocolate boxes as you could shake a stick at, I wanted to share some practical tips to ensure you enjoy the greatest romance of your life.Oscar Wilde once said:
‘To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance’
For some of us the ability to love and accept our true selves is a long and painful journey. Some us deflect our own insecurities externally looking to others for answers, happiness and validation. For natural caregivers it may seem selfish to indulge in such a self orientated romance. Many fundamental aspects of living a happy life stem from falling in love with your inner self, to name a few: self respect, self confidence, self esteem, self discipline, health, motivation, pride in your appearance, the ability to be loved by others. If we don’t love ourselves, how could we imagine anybody else will love us?
I’m not talkin’ staring in the mirror although that can be a pretty great excercise, i’m talking deep thought. Spend at least 10minutes everyday with yourself, alone, in silence, meditate, have a bath or just sit there. Clear your mind of external chaos. Listen to what your body tells you, do you have any aches or pains? Are you worrying about one overriding issue? Are you dreaming of something you would love to do. Put pen to paper, clear your mind of worries or issues yet to be resolved, make plans, think things through. Are you happy? Without personal deep reflection we are bounding through life existing for the dreams of others.
Be your true self:
‘Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else’ -Judy Garland.
You have something unique to offer the world that nobody has or will ever have again. What legacy will you leave behind? Your life is your message to the world. Don’t compare yourself to others, don’t mimic anybody else, don’t compromise even if it’s hard to be yourself at times. Be fearless, be brave, be bold. If you have something that makes you stand out, exaggerate it!! This is my favourite quote by Japanese author Haruki Murakami
‘the fact that I’m me and no one else is one of my greatest assets.’ Be yourself, you are fabulous.
It’s all too easy to be swept along by life, the dreams of others mold us as children, situations in love, life and work arise and sometimes it’s easier to coast along without stopping to ask yourself if this is right for you. I’m often asked to help with unpaid projects, designing graphics and helping suggest creative ideas, I would find myself offering to help out of politeness then I’d be rushing around like crazy on projects that didn’t inspire me all that much. It is only recently I have decided to have the strength to say no to projects that do not command my attention or inspire me. Love yourself enough to have the power to ask what you really want. Next time your faced with a decision or scenario, stop, take some time out, ask yourself ‘is this good enough for me?’ ‘is this what I truly desire?’ ‘does this inspire me?’ if you find yourself answering no, have the courage to politely decline.
Everything that we eat or drink helps paint the picture of who we are and the quality of life we lead. If you live off take-away, beige, processed junk food and lager chances are you’ll get fat, feel tired, lethargic and in turn get depressed, suffer from low confidence and repeat the binge cycle. Bring your awareness to the food and drink you consume. Each mouthful is a decision. Try to make good decisions 80% of the time. Eat fruit and vegetables in every colour of the rainbow, drink loads of water, and try new recipes. Start slowly, don’t subscribe to fad diets that are boring, leave you hungry and just make you acutely aware of the amazing cakes and scones you’re missing. Try to create a simple healthy dish once a day or try a fruit salad for breakfast, gradually introduce healthy options, wind down your sugar and salt intake slowly. Eating good natural, healthy food should be the status quo not a post Christmas fad. Don’t wait for a health scare to get started! Show yourself love from the inside.
