Kangol, Cute from every angle- The Great British Beret! The Kangol brand has long been synonymous with quality hats. Many of us will associate Kangol hats with the 80’s Hip-hop movement, having been famously worn by music greats such as Grandmaster Flash, Kangol Kid, Run-DMC and Notorious BIG. However, the history of Kangol begins long before any boombox or gold rope chain was conceived. Established in 1938 by Jewish Polish refugee and World War I veteran, Jacques Spreiregen, Kangol have produced hats for workers, golfers and soldiers since WWII.
In the 1960’s designers Mary Quant and Pierre Cardin worked with Kangol, producing hats that graced the heads of the rich and famous, including the Beatles and later Princess Diana. With autumn in full swing, I’ve been busying away compiling a few autumn wardrobe staples, including none other than a jolly British Kangol beret. I often struggle to find hats that fit over my hair comfortably, but couldn’t be happier with my new beret. I’m seen here wearing: Denim pencil skirt by New Look, Wolford Tights, Coat by Ryan Vintage, Silk shirt from M&S, Cardigan from H&M.
Fabulous facts: It’s thought that Kangol’s founder Jacques Spreiregen, combined the K from knitting, the ANG from angora, and the OL from wool to cleverly coin the name Kangol. Officially born in Cleator, Cumbria in the U.K, Kangol have been producing hats from their factory in Cumbria since 1938.
Here’s a couple of cracking examples of Kangol adverts throughout history, ranging from the 1950’s ladies beret ads, don’t you just love the illustrations? to the Mens WWII sporting beret advert. I think it’s important to celebrate fine British products and feel rather proud of my new beret, so ideal for autumn and I know it’s going to stand the test of time, the fabrics hardwearing yet soft and the colour compliments pretty much any outfit.
