At Rhythm Riot Vintage Festival this weekend I had the absolute joy of meeting an extremely talented photographer and jolly interesting chap, Gordon Ayres. We got chatting after I spied Gordon’s mini photography studio in the reception area at the festival. I was immediately drawn in by his moody Film Noir inspired portraits and smouldering Hollywood glamour shots.
About Gordon: Gordon Ayres has been photographing the British and Continental 1930s, 40s, 50s retro scene for over 20 years. Gordon has captured the people who create a truly genuine vintage look, the bands, dancers and real individuals that make up the vintage style movement. Gordon lives in the South of England photographing vintage portraits, weddings, he also holds exclusive portrait sessions at his period style home where you are invited to borrow select vintage pieces to wear during your shoot.Portrait Photography: Gordon recalled studying old photographs of his Mother to inspire the pose of his models. Gordon’s portrait work demonstrates an impeccable use of lighting, striking compositions and exquisite attention to detail. The level of subtlety from the positioning of the sitters hands and facial expressions captured are a true testament to Gordon’s dedication to reflecting a genuine vintage style. Some of Gordon’s portrait work would sit happily alongside that of master of Hollywood photographer George Hurrell. Hurrell captured the most exquisite glamour shots of 1930′s-1940′s Hollywood that were usually highly posed, provocative and taken in his studio. What a dream it would be to have classic vintage style portrait picture to frame and sit on top of the grand piano, share with loved ones or hand down to your Grand Children.Wedding Photography: Choosing a wedding photographer can be tricky and is a pretty big decision for most lovebirds. Gordon takes a very classic, timeless and beautifully stylish approach to photographing that special day. His wedding photography is elegant, chic and very tasteful. If you’re into vintage style or want to cherish a timeless keepsake from your big day, Gordon would be the perfect choice.Capturing Daily Life: Some of you will remember my Photography post from the summer celebrating some of my favourite photographers from The Golden Age Of Hollywood. Gordon Ayre’s reportage style photography like that taken by dime newspaper reporters, showing scenes from daily life captures a certain glamour that is both approachable and alluring like that of Hollywood photographer Virgil Apger. This style would make the perfect photography package for any event or celebration, imagine the pictures from a summer garden party, birthday or just a walk in the park with your sweetheart!Fashion Photography: I was blown away by Gordons vintage Vogue style photography shots. He captures the female form so beautifully, creating some real bold silhouettes. Gordon’s work would look right at home in any glossy mag or on the front of a vintage magazine.Film Noir: Moody Film Noir inspired stills just start you guessing about what’s about to happen after the picture was taken! Gordon captures the exotic allure of Burlesque performers and smoky night-club musicians. If you’re a performer, musician or simply love Film Noir this would make an incredible shoot for professional head shots or to build up your portfolio.
Use of quality vintage lens’ and studio lamps create the exact look of the 20s to the 50s for whatever the occasion. See more examples of Gordon Ayres’ work HERE.
