The term pin up was first coined in England in 1941 however, pin up girls are said to have been documented as early as the 1890s. One of the most popular early pin-up girls was Betty Grable, whose poster was hung up in the lockers of G.I.s during World War II. The genre also gave rise to several well-known artists and illustrators specializing in the field, including Earle K. Bergey, Enoch Bolles, Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, George Petty, and numerous notable artists, such as Rolf Armstrong and Art Frahm. We love the classic pin up style from the iconic photographs of beauties Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe to the early illustrations.

Feeling inspired by our favourite pin up girls, we got together for a mini-photoshoot and pool party at our friends house in Santa Paula, Los Angeles. We packed a bag full of our beloved poolside ensembles, stiletto heels, flowers for our hair and some exotic fruits. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome onboard our new sponsor and absolute fave vintage inspired swimwear brand For Luna! You may have noticed the lovely For Luna advert in the side bar, click through and check out their range. For Luna strive to bring glamour, femininity and sophistication to the beach. Stocking time-honoured pin up style swimsuits in our best-loved polka dots, cherry, nautical floral prints and striking red we just love their range. Such an honour to have them sponsor our little blog and we hope you’ll share in our love for their philosophy and gorgeous swimwear. Here are some pictures from our pin up inspired mini pool party!
Theresa loves her Red Retro Swimsuit from For Luna and has been wearing it constantly this summer in the blazing Californian sun. The stunning red one-piece swimsuit has a halter neck with gathered sides, ruching over the tummy area and a skirted front with full coverage to the rear. The ruching and cut of the Red Retro Swimsuit is very slimming and suits all body shapes. Inside the swimsuit you have a lot of support, so your waist is defined and your tummy controlled. So there’s no need to fret over enjoying an ice cream or two poolside. We’re firm believers in wearing swimwear that flatters your figure rather than attempting a farcical ‘bikini diet’ to fit into an unflattering swimsuit or bikini, be happy, look great and enjoy your body. The bust is padded and the halter tie gives great flexibility so you can choose your level of lift around the bust. The straps can be worn around the neck as shown, or tied behind the back for a strapless option, meaning no strap marks when you get a tan. Available up to an F cup, great for all ages. The swimsuit also withstands plenty of swimming, bombing into the pool, attempting headstands, comedy synchronized swimming and general water based silliness. I love the polka dot styles available and our Mum just ordered the Retro Leopard Print Swimsuit! We love For Luna.
Here’s a sneak at some of the photographs we took at our mini pool party. We had so many laughs, strutting around in our Vintage inspired swimwear, lounging by the pool, eating pineapple and taking pictures. The sun was so high in the sky there was nothing better than to launch ourselves into the cold water. Moxy the dog even joined us for a dip.
