The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best regularly performed at different clubs in Hamburg, West Germany from August 1960 to December 1962. A period in time that transformed them from novis Rockers from Liverpool to first rate performers ready to take on the World. We were given the honour of joining self confessed Beatles Fanatic and Ukulele player Stefanie Hempel for a fabulous, musical guided tour around those iconic Beatles sites. Can you tell I’m excited?!
The Magical History Tour: Camera at the ready we set off on our tour and got talking to Stefanie about how the tour began. Until Stefanie moved to Hamburg there were no guided tours to remember and celebrate the famous places that made such an impact on The Beatles success. Stefanie got together a proposal and soon began the very first musical guided tour in Hamburg. From Liverpool to Hamburg: The Beatles’ booking agent, Allan Williams, decided to send the group to Hamburg when another group he managed, Derry and the Seniors had proved successful there. Still teenagers the band headed over to Hamburg from Liverpool with their quiffs and leather jackets to begin a sex, drug & Rock ‘n’ Roll fuelled adventure of a lifetime. Each time we stop to marvel at one of the now famous Beatles landmarks Stefanie cracked out her ukelele and played us a Beatles tune. The Indra Club: In 1960 the band appeared for the first time as “The Beatles” (they were previously known as The Beat Brothers) at the Indra, a former strip club, in the same year they moved to the Kaiserkeller where they first met Ringo Starr. The group played at the Indra club and slept in a small storeroom situated directly behind the screen of the cinema at the Bambi Kino, meaning they were rudely awaken by the sound of Disney films everyday. They were paid £2.50 each a day, seven days a week, playing from 8:30-9:30, 10 until 11, 11:30-12:30, and finishing the evening playing from one until two o’clock in the morning! This intense regime stood the band in good stead for their future World domination.
That John Lennon Album Cover: We stopped to recreate the John Lennon album cover, of course we just couldn’t resist but create our very own version! We had such a laugh playing around with this image. Here I am stood in the same doorway as John Lennon feeling pretty special. We headed to The Star Club where the Beatles played with Little Richard in 1962, imagine being at that show!!! we stopped at The Beatles remembrance Corner and heard tales of female mud wrestling, Hamburgs’ infamous red light district and the fab four’s wild Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle. Stefanie beamed with enthusiasm radiating her passion for The Beatles, we felt very privileged to share in her love.
