Vintage Black Glamour book by Nichelle Gainer! I could while away hours cooing over the fabulous archive of rare photographs on Nichelle Gainer’s blog Vintage Black Glamour. In fact I’ve lost many a coffee break doing exactly that, which is precisely why I was so excited when I was contacted to review a preview of Nichelle’s new book which compiles the best of best photographs from Vintage Black Glamour into a neat edition for the coffee table!
Nichelle was researching for a fictional story she was writing when she stumbled across a rich archive of vintage imagery, lost images of black starlets, beauties and pageant queens from the 1950’s. Her discovery on that quiet afternoon in the Newark Public Library was to lead her to unearth and document an otherwise forgotten slice of vintage glamour!
“I really see ‘Vintage Black Glamour’ as style and substance, so yes, there are definitely the icons like Eartha Kitt, Dorothy Dandridge and Josephine Baker, but you’ll also see a writer like Dr. Maya Angelou — because I want to show that side of it all.” –Gainer told NBC
The 100+ page book, which is only available for pre-order at the moment includes rare candid images including beauties such as Josephine Baker getting a pedicure, Diana Ross on the set of “Mahogany” and Aretha Franklin in her dressing room, to name a few. Seriously fabulous!
